If you’ve already been sent a message and are unable to open it, make sure you’re connected to a Wi-Fi or cellular data connection that can handle iMessage. In these cases, make sure you’re connected to a Wi-Fi or reliable data connection before attempting to send messages through iMessage. Additionally, if you’ve run out of cellular data, have an unstable connection, or have turned off cellular data, iMessage won’t be able to send or receive messages. You might be prompted to turn on iMessage in the process, so make sure that’s enabled before sending any messages. Once that’s set up, simply open the Messages app and begin a conversation. To go back to using iMessage and not regular text messages, you’ll need to make sure you have a data connection (Wi-Fi or cellular data) enabled on your device.
